Three New Commanderies in Brazil
History was made for the Grand Encampment and for the Masons in Brazil when a team of sixteen Sir Knights traveled to Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, to confer the Orders of Knighthood upon 412 Royal Arch Masons on November 22, 2008. Included in the Knightings were four Presiding Grand Masters including the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Rio Grande do Norte. Following the conferral of the Orders, three Commanderies under dispensation were formed and their officers installed by SK David Dixon Goodwin, Right Eminent Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Encampment and Sir Knight Lawrence Eugene Tucker, Right Eminent Grand Recorder.
This was a dream of Sir Knight Rui F. DaSilva, a Brazilian Royal Arch Mason and a Sir Knight of Calvary Commandery No 13, in Providence, Rhode Island. He was instrumental in establishing the American York Rite in Brazil with a Grand Chapter and Grand Council and has desired to establish Commanderies for several years.
Through his contacts in Rhode Island, Calvary Commandery formed a team of Sir Knights willing to go to Brazil and confer the work. With the permission of the Most Eminent Grand Master, and the Right Eminent Grand Commander of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the team was formed under the direction of SK Raymond E. Hassell, PC. The MA/RI team consisted of Sir Knights Eugene Capobianco, REGC MA/RI, Michael Kaulback, PGC, Sidney Clifford, PGC, Steven Smith, PGM-RI, Hirum Jamiel, JGW, Russell Scanlon, Bradly Ripley, Charles Igo, Garabed Emdjian, and Rui DaSilva. Several Sir Knights from various jurisdictions joined the team in Brazil. They were Sir Knights Jimmy Windham PGC, PGM-MS, Maurice "Bud" Himes, AL, Most Puissant Past General Grand Master of the General Grand Council of Cryptic Masons, Int., Edmund "Ted" Harrison, NY, Right Excellent Grand King of the General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, Int., the Right Eminent Grand Recorder and the Right Eminent Deputy Grand Master.
It was an outstanding and overwhelming experience that was enjoyed by all. The new Brazilian Sir Knights spared no effort to see that each visitor was treated royally while in Brazil.
We wish our new Brazilian Sir Knights all the best at working towards chartering their Commanderies and eventually obtaining a Grand Commandery.
